As dusk was fast approaching, I decided to halt
my travels in a rather ragged and unappealing town. Appearances
can be misleading, I reminded myself. Better than tiring myself
out with a further drive, at least I could relax now and who
knows, perhaps there was some redeeming merit to be discovered
in the quiet place. The options for spending the night were,
as one might imagine, from a meagre-looking pensione
and that of a hotel across from it that boasted a few stars
upon its awning and gave the distinct impression of certain
drabness. The pensione being suddenly closed for
refurbishment, as I was notified upon inquiring about possible
vacancies, my decision was set and I crossed the empty street
and entered the hotel…
